Chapter 3 – Little Miss Gossip
The next morning the rain had desiccated up to a drizzle and as Amy left her house she took her umbrella, Jasper’s umbrella was already tucked away in her school bag. She was leaving early this morning; Amy felt that it would be best to return the umbrella when no one was around to witness it.
The weather was still miserable when she arrived at school. She was just coming out of the locker area when Claire caught her attention.
“AMY! Where have you been? I haven’t seen you in ages.” Claire was the same height as Amy, she had large round glasses that hid her long lashed brown eyes, her hair was sunshine blonde, and her bangs and bob framed her thin face. Despite her geekish looks Claire was quite the gossip. Her favourite thing in the world was hearing about what shameless acts other people have done. It seemed that she was trying to tell Amy something but she was not listening.
“Amy, hey are you listening?”
“Ah no sorry can you say it again?”
“I said that Elizabeth, you know the head girl, she’s having an affair with the school gardener, this is the best gossip I’ve heard all year, no wait, in my whole life!” Claire started dancing around the room in delight with her the news.
“Okay calm down,” Amy said taking a hold of Claire’s right arm, “Deep breaths, where did you find this out?”
“Well I over heard the sport teachers the other day, they were saying that one of the teachers went down to the old sports room to check out how much space there was, he then heard someone approaching and instinctively took cover, he heard the door open and someone come in.”
“Well keep going who was it?”
“Isn’t it obvious, it was Elizabeth.” Amy waited in anticipation for Claire to finish telling her story, her face revealed astonishment.
“Yeah that’s what I thought, anyway he watched her walk over to one of the big mats and then lie down, he was just about to leave when the door opened again, this time it was the gardener, he was so shocked that he hid himself completely behind the near by mat. He waited for them to leave but then he started hearing strange noises and when he looked to see what was going on he saw them having sex!” At this stage Amy felt all of the blood rush from her face and her expression become stone like.
“Amy this is the biggest news of the year. I heard the teachers talking about what they were going to do.” Clair took a quick glance at any, “Amy, hey are you feeling okay?”
“Uh, oh yeah I’m just peachy.” She turned and gave Claire the biggest smile she could.
Amy spent the rest of her day avoiding the main gardens; she didn’t want to see Jasper now that she had found out about his relationship with Elizabeth. By lunchtime the gossip had spread to all of the senior years, Elizabeth went missing, her whereabouts were unknown, and another rumour was that Elizabeth had been summoned by her father to the Cobalt’s main office, which is located in the city. The school was very unsettled and even the teachers had a hard time controlling the hordes of gossiping girls.
The situation had only escalated by the end of the day and the front gates were crowed with reporters, asking any of the passing homebound girls for inside information. Earlier the principal had called an emergency assembly trying to explain the situation, however his efforts were futile and the girls paid no attention to what he was saying.
Amy still had to return the umbrella to Jasper so she decided to wait in the library after school until all club activities had finished for the day, she was sure that even the gardeners went home when the club activities were finished, there was a chance that they might have already gone home. She sat by one of the big windows that faced the main gate of the school. Here she could see the many reporters harassing the girls for any information available. The rain had stopped momentarily but the dark clouds threatened to release another down pour at any given moment. Growing tiered of the book that she was reading Amy decided to rest her tiered eyes.
